Strange weekend…

Didn’t get to play any long stretches of poker except for Saturday morning, when I played the $24 tourney at 5am eastern, and I busted out with AA vs. QQ AIPF in the middle of the pack. Played a few Sats with no luck, and a few SNGs and was about even.

For some reason, I found myself played heads-up SNGs, played a few $2s to get my feet wet, and then played the $6 turbo heads up games for a while. I found one opponent at the $6 level that just wanted to push all-in every hand. Once I figured this out (about 3 hands into our first SNG) my calling range became a lot wider. He literally was pushing every hand. I ended up taking 5 of 7 SNGs, funny enough, the 2 that I lost were the best hands I called with, when my KK < his AT, and my JJ < K8. The 5 that I won I called with AT, KJ, KT, QJ and 44 and won all of those to essentially cripple him every time, and then finish him off a couple of hands later.

The bad thing about this is that my wife wanted to watch a movie on TV, and I started playing these, and 5 minutes later, she was calling me into the living room to watch a movie. This guy and I played 7 SNGs in less than 5 minutes, as they were usually over in 3-4 hands, 3 of them on the first hand. I should have kept playing this guy as long as possible, but alas, I could not.

After blowing $100 on MTTs last week, after my rakeback payment, I sit with a $495 bankroll. Not great, but all right. Gotta get a big score in to keep going.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Anyone watch the final table of the $2500 2-day event on FT? Amazing stuff. I watched the last FTOPS $2500 final table a few months ago and thought it was one of the best final tables I have ever watched. This one wasn’t as good, but was still pretty awesome. The most amazing hand I remember was the 2 chipleaders going at it, SB vs. BB. BB was the chipleader with 1,500,000 in chips, SB had about 1,050,000. Folds to them, SB raises to 50k, blinds are 10k/20k, BB raises to 150k, SB calls. Flop is JT9, 2 spades, SB bets 200k, BB raises to 500k, they get it all in, SB has a set of 9s, BB has the nut flush draw. SB hits a boat on the turn, and the hand is over. Biggest of the tournament to that point for sure.

2 hands later, the once chipleader gets it in with AK vs. 66 and hits a K on the river to survive and cripple of the other guy. With a 350k difference in payout when they were 5-handed to the winner, the balls it takes to play like that, I thought it was incredible. I would be $hitting my pants for sure.

Either way, good luck at the tables everyone, will blog later on in the week.

May 17, 2008 Just sorta hanging in there…

Haven’t been playing much the last 4-5 days, my wife is very busy with work, and that means I help her out (she is a freelance pastry chef) and I help more with the kids. I love my kids more than life itself, so it is not a bad thing.

Haven’t played much of anything lately besides the odd SNG here and there. Played two 180-man $4 tourneys on Stars and lost on the final table bubble. I had to get going so I was playing way too aggressively in the last 20 minutes that I was in the tourney, open-shoving 66, KQ, AK, and a variety of other hands when we were down to 14 players. Won a couple of flips, lost a couple of others, the last being AK vs. QQ, the guy hit a set of queens, the turn gave me some hope for a str8, but not to be.

Tried a couple more satellites for FTOPS events with no luck. I am sitting with about $550 in my roll, desperate to try and get something going. I will be playing tonight, so I will try and play the Riverchasers and grab a TOC seat, and I will play a few sats as well. I’ll update my progress at a later time.

Anyways, thanks again for reading, and I will try and update again in a couple of days.

Tried something new...

Got $100 back from rakeback yesterday, so I thought I would test myself by playing the 50/50 and the 32k guaranteed on FT. Tripled up in the 50/50 in the first 20 minutes when I flopped TPTK in a 5-handed flop and got paid off by 2 guys all the way to the river. Played like a tight nit the rest of the way, and ended up getting A9 all-in preflop blind vs. blind with about 10BBs left, BB had AJ, gg me.

Played the 32k as well, got to the money bubble and was 6th out of 125 guys left. Very next hand I played against a guy I had barely covered, he raises, I re-raise on the button with AK, he calls. Flop is K22, we get it all in, he has 99, turn is a 9, gg me.

Played a few SNGs and a 5000FPP SNG for an FTOPS seat, most with not much luck at all. Finished the night about $20 down. Was fun though, but dissapointing when staring at a $6k first place prize.

Either way, not much more poker until next week. Thanks for reading, good luck my fellow bloggers in the FTOPS main event. Hope to see one of you on top!

May 12, 2008 Weekend wrap

As mentioned earlier, I am back to grinding $6 and $11 SNGs for a while. Blew a ton of cash on FT spewing at 100NL and don’t really want to do it again. So I have been strictly playing $6 6-man turbos, and I am up a whopping $65 over 53 games. Woohoo! Also managed to snag two $26 tokens. My roll currently sits at $605.

Played a few MTT satellites for the FTOPS with no success, as well as a few double shootouts for Sunday Million seats, also with no success. My closest call was a double shootout satellite on FT, $14 entry, the top spot getting a $200 and something seat in one of the FTOPS. After rolling over my first table, I was 3-handed with some donk with most of the chips, Scott Fischman and myself.

After the donk took out Fischman, he had a 7:2 chip lead and I managed to claw back to 4600 to 4400 when I busted. I get JJ on the button, make my standard raise, villain re-raises, and at this point, I considered calling to see a hopefully low flop. In hindsight, it would have worked, but as it was, I shoved, he thought he was probably getting the right price at this point and called with KJhh. My jacks are what, 72, 73% at this point, flop comes out all low cards, turn A, river…K!! – obviously. Was so ghey. Haven’t been that peeved at my computer in quite some time.

Either way, a small cash, better than nothing, and after my roll-blowing event from last week, my bankroll is at least moving in the right direction. Hopefully you all are doing well, and hope to see you guys in an FTOPS event very soon. Will continue to try and qualify throughout the week, see what happens.

Good luck to everyone, and thanks for reading.

May 10, 2008 Brought back down to Earth

…and I mean, in a fuckin’ hurry. Basically blew my roll on FTP last night playing 6-max 100NL. And most on hands that I was a dominant favorite.

The first gem was an all-in preflop situation where I had KK vs. the villain’s QQ. I hit a set on the flop, but of course the villain goes runner-runner straight to take my stack. Not 5 minutes later, I am all-in on a 9-high flop with A9 against a super aggressive opponent holding AQ. The dikwad proceeds to go runner-runner flush to take my stack.

Then last, but not least, after I am on super life-tilt, I flop the nut flush, get all of the money in on the turn, only to have my opponent river a FH. I mean, FOOOOOOCK!

Needless to say bankroll has diminished from $800+ to a hair over $500. That’s $120 on FTP, and $400ish on PS. Back to grindin’ the low-end SNGs. Oh yah, I have a $26 token. Guess I’ll play the $32k or $28k guaranteed at some point in the next while. We will see.

Just thought I would share my misery. Ick. Life Tilt.

May 5, 2008 Cash is definitely the way to go

After my insane run on SNGs that netted me about $650 on Full Tilt, the last 2 months have blown pretty much. I cashed a lot of my roll out a little while back, and I was left with about $450 between FT and PS.

On PS, I have been focusing on large MTTs, of which they have plenty. I ran pretty deep in one of their $3 rebuy donkey tourneys, and made a couple of final tables, but no significant cash to speak of. Hours and hours of play (probably in upwards of 60) left me with $200 or so of profit. Ghey.

Anyways, recently, I have been focusing on cash games. My neighbor is a serious poker addict/enthusiast, and he and I have been hanging out lately discussing strategy. He used to be big in the tourneys as well, but has come over to the side of cash games, and has been taking lessons from so guy in the US, and 3-tabling 6-man 200NL for the last month and is up about $7k. I have been sitting in on his lessons a little bit, taking in some strategy, leaning a little more about cash games.

They are both huge proponents now of 6-max cash games – more thought, more action, you are in an action spot in 5 out your 6 hands dealt, and you are always having to do something. I was always a full ring kind of guy – pretty boring, fold a lot of hands, wait for monster, shove with huge hands on donks that seem to call with anything.

Anyways, after recently listening in on these guys a few times, I have taken my strategy to the virtual felt with some good results. Considering I only had $230 on FT, jumping on 2 tables of 6-max 100NL was probably not good bankroll-wise, but I definitely don’t want to go down levels just because I cashed out. I can always deposit more.

Here are a few good hands from my recent play:

I don’t know if I am doing anything differently or better, but between these hands, and one from my previous session that I can’t find the HH to, (standard raise, re-raise preflop, I had QQ, he had KK, Q flops, we get all the money in, +$100 hand for me) I am up about $275 in about 4 hours of play. I mean, Why have I been screwing around so long with SNGs and MTTs? Not quite sure.

Anyways, I have the roll up to about $800 now, up $350 since I cashed out. Hope we can keep this going.

Good luck everyone, be back again soon.

I wish I always had 2 hours to play…

I have had quite a run with these 27-man tourneys on Stars. I have made it to the final 9 without any problems in each of the last 7 times I have played them, and I have booked 1 win, three 2nds, and a 3rd. I don’t know what it is about these tourneys, I guess the structure is slow enough to have skill win out for the most part, and they are full of people who like to race for all of their chips early on.

In my most recent effort this morning, I double up in the first 10 hands when I raised to 80 in middle position (first blind level of 10/20) with KK and was called by button and the BB. Flop comes out a beautiful KT4 two hearts. BB bets 100, I call, button raises to 400, BB thinks about it for quite a while before folding. Obviously, I am trying to figure out how to get all the money in, and figure if this guy is raising, he has AK, QJ of hearts, some kind of flush draw. Anyways, I just pushed and he insta-calls with… AA, no heart. I am just trying to dodge 2 outs, and I do.

Chipped my way up to 6500 with maybe one showdown, and was 3rd of 9 when we got to the final table. Got down to 6 pretty quickly, and then at that point, there were 3 guys at less than 2000 chips on the bubble. Finally, one of them busted and we got down to 3-handed quickly with the CL at 20k+ in chips, and the other villain had about 13, I had 7. Blinds were pretty high, and I was pushing with any 2 decent cards. Finally got called with I pushed with A6 and the big stack called with 22. Flopped 789 of hearts, I had the ace of hearts, so I have got a zillion outs, and even more when the board pairs the 7 on the turn, but no luck on the river. Sure, it’s only $24 for a $5 buy-in, but my ROI on these things is huge. Hope I can keep it going.

Anyways, will try and get some Sunday Million qualifiers in this weekend, as well as a few FTOPS qualifiers as well, see what happens. Hope everyone is well, and good luck at the tables.
