Micro-stakes SNGs

I like these SNGs. They are full of donkeys. Sharkscope has me up over $700 on FT playing $6, $11 and the occasional $22 6-man turbo SNG. Usually, I stick to the $6 because I don’t play for huge profits, I play to make money, but more just to have fun. Once I get playing larger stakes, I get too serious, and get in bad moods when I lose. If I lose $6, who cares.

Take a look at some of the key hands in this SNG that I won in 43 hands.

First of all, the raise with AK is fine. A min-raise with 44? Then an all-in with AK? After the min-raise, it almost feels like a fold, but not an all-in. All of this early in the SNG? Is it really necessary? Don’t know, but it seems like a flat call would be in order, and then an assessment after the flop. In this case, a big bet after the flop would have chased out the 44 almost certainly, and the guy with AK would have won a mid-sized pot instead of losing his whole stack.

This one had me laughing pretty badly. I mean, A6 and 44 call my all-in? Almost surprisingly, my hand holds, as FT makes me sweat a 4-outer even after I hit a set. Typical. What were they expecting to see from me, pocket 2s??

OK, so the open-push with AJ was a questionable move of my own, by why in the heck would you call all-in with 86? Even if they are suited, WTF? Sure, I raise all-in, re-raise with cards like that on the bubble, but especially being on the bubble, why call with that type of hand? He has so many chips, and he is ahead of the 3rd place guy by 1000+ chips, and still makes that call. Wow.

Again, heads-up, I raise with a lot of different holdings, but only if they are closely connected, suited, something decent. K-rag in this situation, in my opinion, is a really bad open-push. I figured with KQ that I am miles ahead of his range, so I call knowing that even if I lose, we are pretty even in chips. I end up dominating him, and take it down.

I have another SNG that I want to go through when I have a little more time, but not right now. Anyone have thoughts regarding micro-SNGs? Anyone feel that they are harder to be profitable with in the long run because of all the donkeys? Thoughts are appreciated. I like them because if you stay patient, you are almost certain to get your chips in with the best of it almost every time. Even the turbo 6-mans give you enough time to wait. The 9-man turbos I don’t like, because when you are 4-handed, the blinds are ridiculous. That’s just my thought.

On the cash game front, same story as the last little while. I play like an idiot for a while, and lose anywhere from $40 to $80, then have one big hand save me at the end of the session. When that big hand happens, I run like hell out of my cash games at even and try to regroup.

Here is today’s example… Already down close to $60 in about 10 minutes, this hand comes up:

As you can see, I did nothing to take control of this pot, but I thought on the river I was happy to have him check behind, because I have no idea where I am, and I can’t fold with the over pair. I actually thought quite a while before calling the river, but I am getting almost 3:1 on the call, so I figured it was a must. To me, him not pushing all in was a sign of weakness and I went with it. I guess I was lucky on this hand.

To wrap up the weekend, I played in a Bracelet Race satellite and finished in the top 15% of so, but failed to get a seat. Played a couple of $750k satellites with no luck, and a couple of other minor sats with absolutely no luck.

The bankroll is sitting at $2,367 and seems stagnant. Seems that I have been between 2,200 - 2,500 forever, and can't get over the hump. I have to get something going…

Thanks for reading. Good luck at the tables.

Quick update before the weekend…

Hello all,

Just thought I would post an update before I headed out for the weekend. Some news from the last 72 hours… let’s see. Well, my wife just booked a trip to Vegas for 3 nights with her mother in mid-April, so that will give me 3 full nights of poker while she is gone. The Golden Nugget had some 3 for 2 promotion going, and so splitting that with the flight from here in Cabo, the trip will be about $600 plus shopping and gambling. Not too bad. A small price to pay for 3 night of poker.

Everything is going pretty well personally. Work has been pretty good lately, although the company is in for a big shake-up. I work for a real estate development company here in Cabo, and with the market the way it is, we will probably be letting quite a few people go. For now, it has been said that I am safe, but in this market, you never know.

On the poker front, big time yoyo action. I played half-drunk the other night, which led to calling with a lot of draws, raising with junk, etc. I was having a good time, but was not hitting. That, along with 4-tabling 100NL, it was an expensive bit of fun. All told, I was down about $150, and only $150 because I river sucked out on a guy with trips, and I made a baby flush on the river for a $120 pot.

The only 2 real hands of interest in the last day are the following:

Obviously, I got lucky on the latter hand, but 20% happens from time to time. Also, I could really put the guy on Aces, as he did a good job concealing that fact. He only called the min-raise of the other guy, so I thought he had a drawing hand. Obviously, when he pushed all in, aces were a definite possibility, but I just couldn’t put him on them. I am definitely not folding KK in that situation.

Another hand that I won big with but lost the HH was another hand with aces when I was in the BB. It was blind vs. blind, and the SB raised to $3 and I smooth called. Flop comes Q-high with 2 diamonds, he bets $5, I call, turn is a blank, he bets $25, I raise all-in, he calls me with the nut-flush draw and misses on the river for a nice $175 pot.

Anyways, even with those 2 big pots, I am pretty much net even for the last few days. Played about ten 6-man SNGs in the last 2-3 days, and was about even on those as well. My roll sits at $2,368 as of this moment, and again, I have said this before, I feel stuck around this number. I can’t really get myself past this. Anyways, I will keep trekking and see what happens.

What I am most excited about it playing a few blogger tournaments while my wife is gone. I read about them all the time on other blogs, and am looking forward to participating. The MATH and the blogger big game, those types of tournaments. Hopefully, I can have a nice few days in April when those are still going on, and perhaps snap up a TOC berth for the free WSOP seat. Who knows…

Either way, thanks for reading, and look forward to seeing you guys in blogger tournaments in a few weeks.

Hi Everyone!

Hope everyone had a happy Easter. My family had various festivities over the weekend, culminating with a weekend get-together with 60 other kids and their parents at one of the local farm-like hangouts. Hung out, drank a little, the kids ran around looking for eggs, did a potluck-style deal with everyone bringing something. There was so much food, it was ridiculous. Too much really.

Spent the day at the beach on Thursday, (had Thu-Sun off) just the wife and me, took a book and drove out about an hour to a secluded beach, put up an umbrella, and lounged for 4-5 hours. Was lovely. Nothing to hear except for the crashing waves. Pure bliss.

Got in a little bit of poker this weekend, not much. Here are a few of the more interesting hands that I was involved in. At the end of it all, my roll yo-yoed up $100, down $100, and ended up at about $2,365.

Here are some of the high(low)lights:

Forgot to save this hand history, and don’t have them automatically saving to the hard drive, but the summary was I get involved with a villain with about $65, I have about $100. I raise to $3.50 with AcKc and he re-raises to $10. I call. Flop comes Jc7c3d. We get all of the money in at that point after a raise, re-raise and all-in, and he turns over QQ. I am actually a 55-45 favorite to win the pot at this point, but the turn and river blank, and I lose about $65 on the hand.

Here are some others that I actually saved the histories on…

Not much else to speak of really. Got caught bluffing a couple of times, and then chased an open-ended straight flush draw with some big betting all the way to the river with 4 other guys in the pot that cost me some bucks. If I would have hit, it would have been a monster pay-off.

Anyways, no poker for a few days, will update again when I get in some hours.

Thanks for reading, as always.

Weekend wrap…

Nothing too incredible to talk about this weekend. I will post some hands a little later, right now, I don’t have time. My new theory of shoving with Aces has worked, I have yet to lose a pot with them yet. I had them 6 times over the weekend, got called once with TT and won, and pick up blinds and raises the other times, so in all, I am up about $75 with AA. That, combined with the AA vs. JJ from a few days ago, and things are looking up with AA. :D I much prefer that then guessing after the flop as to whether or not anyone has a set. I was getting stacked so much with that, it was sickening.

Didn’t get in very much poker this weekend, probably only played about 3 hours, but have managed to pick up $50 out of my $100 FT bonus since I claimed it a week back, and my bankroll has been increased to about $2,400. Basically ½ and ½ on FT and Stars. I feel like I keep reaching a ceiling, and that $2.5k seems to be as much as I can get to. Probably mental.

One good thing on the poker front is that my wife wants to go away with all of the kids in July for 6 weeks. Fuck. 6 weeks with nobody in my house except me. Hard to fathom. What would I do with myself for 6 weeks? Hmmmm….

Hope everyone is doing well, and good luck at the tables.

Live Poker is Rigged

Holy Shit, got invited to play a home game yesterday evening with some real estate guys from town. The play was so bad. There were 10 players, structure wasn’t too bad, Start with 75BB, blinds double every 45 minutes. $50 buy in, optional rebuy for the first 2 levels. Of course, after the first 2 levels were over, ½ the guys were very drunk and begging to buy back in at a 50% premium, as they said, “just to have a chance!”

The play was extremely slow. I am sure that I see more hands per blind level in a turbo SNG on Stars. Took forever for guys to make decisions, they chased gutshots until the river. On one hand, where it was obviously 1 guys had a big pair and 2 guys were on draws, when the turn completed neither draw, they guy with the big pair checks. Huh? Of course, the river made the straight and the flush, and the guy with KK still called a huge bet from the flush that bet and the straight guy called as well. So bad.

As far as it went for me, got nothing for the first hour (which was probably only 20 hands anyways) dwindled down to half my stack, and I was in the BB, and told myself that if I saw anything better than AJ, I was going all in and rebuying if necessary. 7 people call around the table and I look down at 55. All in! The shitty part was that 5 guys called. I push for 20ish BB and 5 guys called. WTF?? Anyways, so there is a lot in the middle for me and for some wonderful reason, there is a 5 on the flop, and I quintuple up to 2nd stack.

As we neared the bubble, guys with 2-3 BB left in their stack were folding left, right and center. Nobody wanted to go out. I was lo win chips, and ended up going all-in with AJ vs. AQ, and hit a J on the flop and one on the turn. Lucky there. With 5 guys left, I went all-in twice, once with KT (I was getting low again) and the big stack called me with 55. Luckily I hit a K and survived. About 5 hands later, that big stack had dwindled down to less chips than I had, and called my all-in re-raise with AQ when I had JJ. A king flopped, but nothing else, and he was knocked out. 1 from the money.

I knocked the 4th place guy out with my 88 vs. his AK (I hit another set) and the third place guy got knocked out when the big stack called the shorty’s all-in re-raise, shorty had AK, big stack had AA. Now, we are heads up. I was raising basically every decent hand, and he was folding. Slow-played AA on one occasion and he called my all-in after the flop with top pair and I was inches from victory. I had a 9-1 chip lead. Then, disaster.

Next hand, I’m he’s all in with JT suited, I call with AQ, I hit an A on the flop, he goes runner runner flush. Next hand, he goes all-in with 43 suited, I called with AJ, hit an A on the flop, he goes runner runner flush again. Ick.

I slow down a little, slow play the nut flush to take some chips off of him, and eventually get back to a 5-1 chip lead. I then go all-in with 99, he calls with T8, flops a flush draw, turns a T and river the flush. How gay. Next hand, he goes all-in with TT, I call with AK, he holds. He now has the chip lead, and I am steaming. The next hand, I go all-in with KT and he calls with QJ, flops a J and it’s over. All those bad beats at the end cost me the $200 difference between 1st and 2nd. But, for my one $50 buy-in, I made $300, not bad for a night’s work. At least my wife was happy when I got home extremely late.

As for online poker, I have banned myself from Stars for the next 30 days to appease my wife. Apparently, I am playing too much. And really, I am playing a lot, so it is probably goo for me. Only live for the next while. She says it’s ok as long as I am being social and not curled up in a corner staring at my computer. I agree with her a little bit, but 3 days into this ban, I am already itchin’ to play more. How am I going to last 27 more days? Lots of live poker hopefully.

Anyways, my roll online is about $2,300, and it will stay that way until April 11th. My live poker money, I don’t have a roll, as last night’s money will go to pay the nanny for the week and send my wife off for a pedicure and manicure. Hey, if I give her some of my winnings, she’s happy, and lets me go out and play again. It’s a win-win.

Thanks for reading guys, good luck at the tables, virtual or otherwise.

Weekend recap - a little late...

Hello all...

The update is coming a little late this week, lots of shit going on, HOA problems, busy schedule at work and socially (not my choice for sure) and various other things have prevented me from posting.

Played mostly cash over the weekend with quite a bit of success. I made a decision to jump to 100NL because the play is essentially the same, and because I am such a tight nit, I rarely get into a situation to lose all of my stack, and only in situations to double up. I'll take an extra $100 over $50 any day. As well, I have about 18 buy-ins available between PS and FT, so I thought what the h-e-double hockey sticks.

Here are some on the more interesting hands from a weekend that had me up 3 1/2 buy-ins:

That was pretty much all of my big hands over the weekend. Haven't played that much since, and probably won't for the next week or so. I will update early next week when I have some interesting hands to see.

Thanks for reading, good luck to everyone.

Wow, been a while...

Lots has happened in the last couple of weeks, all things non-poker related. Two seperate tregedies in the family, coupled with my wife's desire that I don't play online poker anymore have created a lot of tension/emotion in the house, and it has been difficult to play.

Trust me, my wife and kids are more important than online poker a million times over, but that doesn't mean I won't play. Online poker is my getaway, my dive into non-reality for a while, and lets me forget about everyday problems, at least for an evening.

Things on the whole for my family are great. Kids are healthy, wife is pretty happy. We just celebrated our 1st/4th anniversary (married on Feb 29th) and took a weekend getaway to a nice place nearby. Kids were looked after by nannies and my mom, so it was nice to completely get away for a while, hang out on the beach, sip margaritas at 10am, get room service, watch pay-per-view without getting out of bed. It was a nice time to spend with your wife, sort of a re-connection after her 10-day trip to Canada.

As far as poker goes, nothing to amazing happening. I cashed out $500 to pay for the weekend trip, and the poker that I have played has not gone well. Been playing some WSOP steps SNGs on Stars and not really getting anywhere, play a few MTTs and done nothing, and played no cash. My roll is about $1900 left online and I am due a $120ish rakeback payment in a couple of days, so that will bring my roll back to $2k. I'll spend a few hundred bucks trying to qualify for the WSOP, and probably cash out some more money at the end of the month.

I promised my wife to cut back the online poker, and will now probably play only once a week, 4-5 times a month. It will be in the evenings, and I will play a ton of MTTs and cash simultaneously when I do play to get as much in as possible. I want to try and get in as much as possible so I can play the PS freerolls for the WSOP main event, and get back to Silverstar status to play some of those freerolls as well.

Anywho, posting will definately be cut back a bit unless something amazing happens, I'd say about once a week to update progress.

Thanks to everyone who reads my blog, and good luck at the tables.

Ryan
