Total Profit - $3.00!!!!!

My daughter got me up at 4:00 this morning, she couldn’t sleep, and she wanted water, and this and that, so of course, daddy gets up. My wife was complaining about me rolling into her in bed and snoring too much, so I guess that is a sign. Get up and play poker.

All of my other SNGs, other than the last one that I won, I played good poker. Couple of classic suckouts by my opponents got me sent to the rail early on. My favorite one was when I raised it up in the second level of the $13 6-man SNG to 4xBB with TT from the cutoff, get called by the SB and BB. Flop comes rainbow 2 5 8. Perfect. SB bets ½ pot, BB raises, I contemplate a call or a shove, and figured a raise would commit me anyways, so I shove, SB folds and BB calls with…………………………….JT? Of course a 9 on the turn gave him some more outs, and he spikes a J on the river to take the pot. I mean, WTF was he thinking? So ghey.

For some reason, I have had some success lately specifically in the $5 27-person SNGs with 2 2nds and now a first. This one went pretty smoothly as we worked to the final table, and I kept getting my money in good. Here are a couple of hands leading up to the last table:

As we were on the bubble, the 2 bigger stacks raised every time and everyone folded. I wasn’t picking up any hands, and chose to hang back until one of the short stacks went out and we made the money. That never seemed to happen. And the big stacks wanted the bubble to continue, case in point…

I mean, it wouldn’t be too much to get the small stack out with any kind of raise by the big stacks, but they didn’t want him out yet. As a result, I blinded myself down to nothing, and all of a sudden, I was in danger on going out on the bubble. Here is the hand that saved me.

Ryan

State of affairs…

Well, things are better now. A lot of soul searching, underwear drawer cleaning and gut-wrenching conversations later, things are a lot better. I look back on the last week and wonder what happened, complain about feeling like crap, fighting with my wife too much, being annoyed about a lot of things. Then I sit back and look at my life, being blessed with a beautiful, hard-working wife, 3 lovely children, a great job, some really great friends, and the God-given freedom as a Canadian to do whatever I want, whenever I want, and have enough money to do it with.

I live in a place, just like any other place, but one with poverty, people living on $15 a day or less, living in wooden shacks, houses that have garbage bags as roofs, and here I am, a guy making a high 5-figure salary, and having all he could ask for, and I am here complaining. Quite sad really.

Anyways, I have made some short and long-term goals, not the least of which is to appreciate life, enjoy it, get organized, respect myself and my house, the people that live in it, and wake up with a smile every morning. I don’t think that is too much to ask given my circumstances.

On to poker…

My only young Canadian neighbor of mine has taken me in 3 of the last 6 nights, and we have been talking SNGs. I have been really disappointed at my SNG play lately. Whenever I am, I go see him for some pick-me-ups, and some sound advice. He has been playing of Cake Poker recently, and is up about $5k on that site in the last month playing $50-75 SNGs.

Last night, we talked strategy, watch a couple of PokerXfactor videos, emphasizing the need to be very patient early, and whether you are playing a regular or a turbo SNG, that the ability to fold almost every hand in the first 2-3 levels. That is, unless you get a really good hand. I was looking back at some of my recent HHs, and I was noticing that I was seeing 30-35% of flops in the first 2 levels, with the theory of, “seeing flops is pretty cheap – maybe I can see one with 75suited and get lucky.” You see 8-10 flops early on and don’t get lucky, you’ve drained 20-30% of your chips unnecessarily.

So, with my refreshed knowledge intact, I set out to play some SNGs last night, and fared pretty well. Here are some hands from the last SNG I played, indicating a) how bad the play was, b) How people raise the wrong amounts at the wrong times, and c) Play ABC poker at SNGs of this level, I would say at least to the $25 level. That is as high as I have played, and it is ABC poker all the way up to that level for sure.

Hand #1: A perfect example of needing to have the ability to lay down hands when you don’t hit, especially early on in the first 2 levels.

What the hell were those guys thinking, to me, it’s just unnecessary to be trying to pull these moves that obviously don’t work at these SNG levels.

After one of the short stacks pushes with QT and gets called by AK, this shitty hand happens.

Anyways, I never really put myself in danger with any shitty hands, and played standard, ABC poker. And that is what it takes to win these things. A little luck doesn’t hurt either. :D

Anyways, off I go, gotta work a little more before I get home.

Talk to you all soon.

My last hoorah (for a while)

Not my last hoorah forever, just for the next while. Played again last night for another 7+ hours, played various $2-$10 MTTs and ran pretty poorly early on, couldn’t get anything going. I was out in the first 3 tournaments by the second break, well short of the money.

While busting out of these tourneys, I was in the $3 rebuy donkfest again on Stars. Was in for one buy-in and an add-on, and was sitting with 6k in chips at the first break. Very first hand of the non-rebuy period, I get QQ in the SB. Folded around to me, I had the BB covered barely and I raise it to 3x the BB, he insta-shoves, and I call. He tables AQsuited, turns a flush draw but doesn’t get there. Up to 12k in chips.

I lost a hand when I call a small stack shove with AJ, he had AQ but only 2k in chips. Then, I doubled up on a flopped set vs. an overpair and after chipping up a little bit more during the second hour, I was sitting at 30k in chips, well in the top 15% of those remaining.

All ended up going to hell, when the 6th or 7th hand of the 3rd hour, I pick up JdJc in the cutoff and raise it up, get called by the BB, who is the only guy at the table that has me outchipped. Flop comes out 2d4d5d. So there is like 2k chips in the pot, and this guy insta-shoves for all of his chips. I sat back and thought for a while, took some time to think, and eventually called. BB has 9c9s, shit, he’s drawing to one out, and the mofo hits the 9h on the turn and I don’t hit my flush or a J on the river. I win that hand and I would have been in the top 5 in chips. As it turned out, he was top 5 in chips. So gay.

Played 3 $4-180man SNGs on Stars with no success on the first 2, but managed to final table the 3rd one. My only bright spot of the night. I was the 2nd stack with 7 to go, but when we got down to 4-handed, chip stacks were 90k, 70k, 70k and me at 40k. 2nd hand 4-handed, I have AdQd in the BB, one of the 70k stacks raises UTG, and I shove, he calls and tables AT, first card out?? You guessed it, a T. I don’t catch up. Gay $60 cash on that one, but it put me in the positive for the evening. All in all, the 3 days my wife was gone, I played a lot, got in some good MTT time, and feel that my game is pretty good right now.

To summarize, I played 42 tournaments, ranging from $2 to $10, and netted just over $200 for the 3 days. Doesn’t seem like a lot, but any positive is good for MTTs considering I haven’t played many lately, and, my bankroll that I cashed out down to close to $400 has now risen to $600ish, so I am pretty happy about that.

Anyways, hope all is well with everyone, and good luck at the tables.

Laziness...

Sorry for the updates recently, or lack thereof. I have actually been playing a lot of poker lately. My wife has been out of town the last couple of nights and will be back tomorrow, so more poker on the way tonight as well.

As mentioned before, I took a lot of my roll offline to pay the mortgage, and when I did, I had about $450 left online. Since then, I am down about $100 playing SNGs on FT, and have been playing some $2-$10 MTTs on Stars.

I had a couple of good results in the last 2 days, getting into the top 40 out of 3338 people in the $3 rebuy donkfest on Stars, and then made the final table of a $9 360-man to finish a dissapointing 8th after being chipleader with about 20 to go.

Also finished top-20 in 2 other 1000+ person tournaments, and feel like my MTT game is pretty good. In the 360-man tourney, until the last hand I went out it, when I got my money in on the flop or pre-flop, I was a favorite almost every time, with 2-3 of them being races. When I got short-stacked at the end, I pushed AQ, which was the best hand i'd seen in about an hour, into QQ and failed to hit an A.

Wanted to post a couple of the hands on here to ask what people thought of a few plays that I made, but I don't have time right now.

I will do a big recap in the next couple of days about everything that has transpired in the last week, but I gotta get back to work right now.

Hope everyone is well, and God Bless.

This roller-coaster is only going down...

No easy way to say this, but I am cashing out most of my roll. What peaked at over $2,700 a couple of months ago has seen a steady decline in the last few weeks. I can't win a race, my kings are losing to AT, Queens are no good against 22, and I am feeling incredibly negative regarding all facets of my game.

My roll on each PS and FT is approx. $975. I am cashing out $750 on each to pay for a mortgage payment, which does help out a lot, and leaving about $450 total online between both sites.

I remember the days that it was fun to play on the 10NL tables. When I made that jump to 25NL, it got my heart pumping. I wan't to go back to that for now and enjoy playing poker, not just enjoy making money. If I enjoy it, and I make the correct moves, I can build the roll back up again. But honestly, I can really use a 1-month break on paying the mortgage, it helps out a lot.

So, back to $6 SNGs and $2-$5 MTTs, and 10NL. I may play the occasional 25NL table, but for now, back to lower limits and increased enjoyment playing the game.

As I was explaining to people close to me, if I saw my $100 deposit build to $2,700 and then go to 0, it feels like I lost $2,700, not spent $100 on a lot of fun. So, I am going to cash out while I can and help with family stuff.

The one exciting thing is that my wife is away for a few days, and I will get the chance to play the MATH and a couple of blogger events and see these guys in action that I don't see too often, so that will be nice.

I will continue posting at least on a weekly basis to update you on my new trek from $450 to wherever that may lead. I hope those who read will not stop reading, and thanks everyone who has supported me over the last few months. I hope you continue to rail, as I will with you.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone at the tables.

Variance is the word of the day

Don’t really have that many interesting things to say today, other than the variance for me is at an all-time high. Maybe because I am constantly at the 100NL level and testing the 200NL waters that things are heating up a little bit.

He has an OESD on the low end, he has to know that he is beat, and really, you might even suspect on the turn that the other guy has the straight. Then he calls the river bet whilst playing the board. Good stuff!!

Was pretty happy, obviously, with this one, nice to see I outflopped my opponent who obviously put me on AK or AQ.

My bankroll, which started the weekend at about $2,350 peaked at about $2,500, eventually went on a 3 buy-in scorching down to under $2,200, and I have been working my way back up since then, and I am back up to about $2,380. All that excitement to be down $70. Gay.

Won’t be playing much this week, and we are going away next weekend, much to me bitching because it is Masters Week. But the wife wants to go, and I guess I can always tape the golf. My wife has her last free weekend until July, so I guess I should go.

Thanks for reading.

Micro SNG follow-up

A few days back, I wrote of a nasty SNG in which the play was just horrendous. Even up to the $11 level, the play is suspect. I played a $22 SNG the day before yesterday and have to say that the quality of play was definitely a notch above the $6 & $11 levels.

I say that, and then realize that when we got to the ridiculous blind levels of 200/400, I was the short stack with 1400 after doubling up as a 60/40 dog the previous hand, the 2 big stacks, who were even in chips, get it all-in pre-flop AJ vs. KQ. Don’t know exactly why they did that, but thanks. I busted in 2nd on the very next hand, ended up a dog going in and caught the flop, but the river doomed me.

Here are a few hands from a similar $6 SNG, like that of one of my previous posts, that I felt the play was just horrific…

This hand really had me howling. I mean, he checks behind with his flush and then calls an all-in when the pot was only, what, 120 chips? I think this might win the OBFV on Fuel’s blog (http://fuel55.blogspot.com), let me calculate… Pot was 120, he calls 1640, = 0.93. I think that one is the winner folks.

Unfortunately, I ended up busting in 3rd when my AQ AIPF was no good against the shortstack’s JTo. Then I was shortstacked myself and ran AT into AK. GG me.

Cash Game Play

As always, at it seems these days, my cash game strategy is to lose a buy-in or so in the first 10-20 minutes of play and then limp along until I get a huge hand to win the buy-in back. As was the case in my last session, I was already down $80 after I flopped and OESFD, and pushed and didn’t get there against a guy with top pair, decent kicker. It was incredible that I actually had about 20 outs twice and couldn’t hit. Very gay.

Anyways, after that happens, this hand comes up:

If the guy has a full buy-in, then I probably re-raise and if he shoves, I fold. Because he only had $40ish to start the hand, I decided to just put him all in. Didn’t work out. Shortly after…

I thought the re-raise all-in to isolate was the best plan, especially after he called the short stack all in. Any thought on this hand? Anyways, as is the case, my roll is still stagnant at $2,350ish. Still working on getting over the hump.

As always, any feedback is appreciated. Good luck to everyone at the tables, and thanks for reading.
